Last week, I was invited to check out DineFest – a ten-day culinary event (15th Feb – 28th Feb 2016) held across Bombay, Delhi and Bangalore. Featuring prix-fixe menus at several of each city’s casual dining restaurants, you can enjoy a three-course feast at a fraction of the a la carte cost.
The Bombay Canteen turned one year old on February 11th. To commemorate the occasion, Chef Floyd Cardoz, Chef Thomas Zacharias, Sameer Seth, Yash Bhanage and Radhika Misra flew their Mothers in from across India, to collaborate on a very special menu.
Love ’em or hate ’em – food trends are what can make or break a restaurant. I’m not going to get into the nitty gritty of consumer behaviour and how it can affect the food chain (pun intended) but I am going to talk about the latest food trend to hit the scene in Bombay – the humble bao.

I’ve never been as excited to visit a Restaurant, as I was before my meal at Gaggan. Ranked the #1 ‘Best Restaurant in Asia’ and Thailand (respectively) for 2015 by ‘World’s 50 Best’ (and being the only Indian Restaurant to crack the top 10), I’d only heard whispers of Chef Gaggan Anand’s culinary prowess until this past October. I really wasn’t sure what to expect – other than some interesting molecular gastronomy techniques. Gaggan’s philosophy is “progressive”, taking traditional Indian cuisine to the next level, using modern food science and techniques.
The first time I walked into Kaboom, I was struck by the vibrant green of their open Kitchen. Though I’d heard about their organic, farm-fresh fare, I hadn’t made a visit yet, until I attended the launch of the Slow Food Movement – Mumbai Chapter (more on that later). Contrary to my experience with most Restaurants that pull out all the stops at tastings and then slowly decline in consistency, The Bombay Canteen (TBC) continues to impress. After my first visit (read: What’s Old is New at The Bombay Canteen), I went back for a meal with my family, and even ordered take-out from them. Each visit has been more enjoyable than the last.
This August, Olive Bistro finally brought the Guppy by ai pop-up to Poona. Lead by their award-winning Chef Vikram Khatri, Guppy promised fun, contemporary ‘Japaneasy’ food and delicious Tokyo-style Cocktails. I was invited for the preview and was really looking forward to it, having sampled their fare once before at a Farmers’ Market.
